ABOUT THE PROJECT
Through the Wall is a project to create a national network of audio pen pals! We pair up people from across Canada to exchange audio letters, offering you a glimpse into a different place and a different perspective…
Participants are paired based off similarities and enough differences to make the correspondence interesting. Letters are recorded, sent to us to be screened and archived, then passed along. These correspondences will culminate in the creation of a podcast that will be shared on this website and on podcast apps.
Questions you might have!
How do I sign up?
It’s easy! Just share a bit about yourself and upload an audio recording here. Then, we’ll pair you up with someone, make the introductions and get you started on your journey Through the Wall!
When does it start and when does it end?
You can start whenever. Correspondences will last as long as you’d like or for as long as the project runs.
Who is this project for?
If you are a curious and friendly person, this project is for you!
What do I do?
You’ll record and send an audio letter and get one back from your pen pal. Every once in a while, you’ll get a question or prompt from us to address a broader topic we see appearing across correspondences or in the news. We’ll also encourage you to send photos, videos, and sound recordings along with your correspondence to create even more meaningful connections.
How often should I send letters and how long should they be?
Letters are usually sent every one or two weeks. They can be as short or as long as you’d like, depending on how much you have to say that day.
How does the podcast part work?
We want to use these letters to capture the COVID experience in real time, then sculpt them into a podcast. If you consent, we will include your letters in this final piece. If you do not consent, you can still participate the same!
How much does it cost to join?
It’s totally free!
For thousands of years, people have been travelling across Turtle Island, connecting with each other and sharing stories. Theatre Direct and Through the Wall want to acknowledge all of the Indigenous people past, present and future that have travelled throughout this land. We hope that the 7 teachings Indigenous teachings: Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth, will guide us as we share stories and connect with each other through this project.
